Cal Poly Spring 2007 Commencement Set for June 16

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- More than 3,600 students are eligible to graduate in two separate ceremonies at Cal Poly’s Spring Commencement Saturday, June 16, in the Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

This year’s commencement schedule is:

9 a.m. Ceremony

  • College of Engineering – 796 eligible graduates
  • College of Liberal Arts – 713 eligible graduates
  • College of Science and Mathematics – 299 eligible graduates

3 p.m. Ceremony

  • College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences –
    664 eligible graduates
  • College of Architecture and Environmental Design –
    418 eligible graduates
  • Orfalea College of Business – 600 eligible graduates
  • College of Education – 99 Master of Arts in Education,
    204 Credentials, seven Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership

Cal Poly will confer three honorary degrees during this year’s commencement ceremonies.

Donald E. Bently will receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Science in recognition of outstanding achievements in business, engineering and sustainable agriculture practices, and service in support of engineering education. Bently is president of the Bently Pressurized Bearing Company and founder and former chairman and CEO of Bently Nevada Corporation. It is the world's leading supplier of monitoring instrumentation and services (now part of GE Power Systems).

Paul R. Bonderson, Jr. will receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Science in recognition of his outstanding achievements in business and engineering and his leadership and support of project- based learning. Bonderson is currently president of Lone Oak Ventures LLC, and the former vice president of engineering and the co-founder of Brocade Communications Systems Inc., a leading provider of infrastructure solutions for Storage Area Networks. He is credited with developing the company’s product strategy, business strategy and business plan. Bonderson will give the keynote address at the 9 a.m. ceremony.

Paul Orfalea will receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a business leader and entrepreneur, his service to the cause of education and early childhood education, and the inspiring example he has set in overcoming personal adversity to achieve success and make important contributions to society. Orfalea will give the keynote address at the 3 p.m. ceremony.

Cal Poly expects as many as 30,000 visitors to campus for the commencement ceremonies.
