July 20, 2007 Contact: Amy Hewes Cal Poly Engineering Summer Camp Students TO: News Editors, Photo Editors, Assignment Editors and Reporters WHO: Female and low-income high school students from San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria, who are enrolled in “Engineering Days at Cal Poly,” a week-long, on-campus, engineering “day camp” sponsored by the Women’s Engineering Program WHAT: Demonstration of student projects in various fields of engineering, including computer science and computer engineering, electrical engineering and materials engineering, civil and environmental engineering, and aeronautical engineering. Many students will display robots that draw pictures. Other students will fire rockets they have built during the week. WHEN: Friday, July 20, 2:45-3:45 p.m. (Note: Final development of the robots will take place Friday, July 20 at 12:30-2:45 in Building 14-256. Rocket launching will take place Friday, July 20, 1:30-2:30 at the Aero Hangar on campus, Building 04. All projects take place at Cal Poly). WHERE: Bonderson Projects Center, Room 107 at Cal Poly. MORE INFORMATION: Offered by the Cal Poly Women’s Engineering Program for the first time, “Engineering Days at Cal Poly” consists of a week-long educational summer camp for high school students from San Luis Obispo County and Santa Maria. The day camp targets females, low-income and potential first generation college graduates. To recruit student enrollees, camp faculty worked with AVID, a program designed to encourage college attendance by students whose parents did not receive a college degree. The program includes instruction in engineering fields and practical advice in preparing for college, as well as a field trip to the PG&E Community Center and Avila Pier. Camp staff includes volunteers from Cal Poly’s Society of Women Engineers and six female College of Engineering faculty members. The program culminates in a hands-on engineering design activity and a demonstration of student projects. Engineering Days is sponsored by Cisco Networking, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Morro Bay Power Plant, PG&E, Raytheon, and the Wolfgang Pollack Foundation. ###
