Cal Poly Symphony to Showcase Soloists at Winter Concert March 11

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Cal Poly Symphony will celebrate the talent of student soloists at its Winter Concert on Sunday, March 11. The Student Soloist Showcase, featuring performances by winners of the Music Department's Solo Competition, will be at 3 p.m. in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center.

Senior music major Alex Kato-Willis, a San Luis Obispo resident, will perform the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Ryan Putt, a music graduate also from San Luis Obispo, will play Gordon Jacob’s Concerto for Trombone. 

Student vocalist and junior music major Ramón Echevarría will sing “Vainement ma bien Aimée,” from Edouard Lalo’s opera “Roi d’Ys” (“The King of Ys”).  

Corrie Stallings, a sophomore music major, will perform Jerome Kern’s “Bill” from the Broadway musical “Showboat.” Sophia Newton, a child development major minoring in music, will sing Arthur Sullivan’s “If Some Day There Chanced To Be” from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Ruddigore,” (or “The Witch's Curse.”) 

Music Department faculty member David Arrivée will conduct the program, which will also feature music from the movies “Vertigo” and “E.T.,” as well as Brahms’ “Academic Festival Overture.”

Tickets for the concert are $10 and $12 for the public, $8 and $10 for seniors and $6 for students. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787).

Patrons who buy season tickets to four Music Department events through the Performing Arts Ticket office will receive a 10 percent discount; a 15 percent discount is given to those who buy tickets to five or more events.
