Cal Poly Theatre and Dance to Stage ‘Round Heads and Pointed Heads’

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s Theatre and Dance Department will present Bertolt Brecht’s political play “Round Heads and Pointed Heads” at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 1-3 and March 8-10, plus a matinee at 2 p.m. March 10. All showings will be in the Spanos Theatre on campus.

In this fictitious, obscure script, in the “economically challenged” country of Yahoo, a bankrupt government, desperate to quell civic unrest, enlists the help of racist figurehead Iberin. “The empowered dictator institutes an agenda of fortifying the country's master race of round-headed Zaks against the inferior pointed-head Ziks,” said Josh Machamer, director of the play.

“In the end, the battle for racial superiority cracks under the necessity of larger, ‘capital’ interests. Nothing mends fences more than the conquering and cleansing qualities of cold hard cash and, perhaps, nothing sells more than a good old-fashioned war,” he said.

“Brecht’s grotesque, expressionistic, carnival-like fable is based on Hitler’s ‘master race’ policy,” Machamer said. “The play acts as a contemporary parable, illustrating the battle between class distinction and racial profiling.”

The production features a company of 11 actors and three musicians. Tickets are $10 to $12 and are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO- ARTS (756-2787).
