Angela Davis to Headline Cal Poly’s Women’s History Month March 9

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Angela Davis, one of the most influential feminist scholars and activists of the late 20th century, will be headlining Cal Poly’s Women’s History Month celebration at 7 p.m. Friday, March 9, in Chumash Auditorium.

Davis will speak on “Building Communities of Resistance,” focusing on her experiences in activism, prison reform, and her belief in non-violent resistance. Davis will recount her experiences being on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” list, as well as her role in the civil rights movement.

Davis, a professor at UC Santa Cruz, has spent her life “exposing the oppressions marginalized populations face in the United States, specifically focusing on the intersection of race, class and gender,” said Ruth Osorio, outreach coordinator for Cal Poly Women’s Programs.

“Angela Davis is a critical figure in American history. Her involvement in the civil rights movement and the feminist movement shaped the way society thinks about class, race and gender,” Osorio said.

Admission is free for all students and $10 for community members. Tickets can be bought at the door.

Cal Poly Women’s History Month is a collaborative effort of Cal Poly’s Women’s Programs and Services, the Multicultural Center, Vice President for Student Affairs office, Political Science Department, Ethnic Studies Department, Women’s Studies Program, History Department, Black Faculty and Staff Association, Career Services, Democratic Women United, and San Luis Obispo’s National Organization of Women.
