Architecture Students Create Designs for Proposed Nipomo Community Center
SAN LUIS OBISPO - The proposed community center in Nipomo is taking shape thanks to a group of Cal Poly architecture students.
Six student designs, chosen by the Nipomo Recreation Association as possible choices for the new center, will be on display Saturday, May 5, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Edwards Barn, located at the corner of Willow Road and Pomeroy in Nipomo.
The event, "Cinco de Mayo Night Out on the Town," is a fundraiser for the proposed community center, as well as an opportunity for the public to review the student designs.
Cal Poly faculty member Margarida Yin assigned the Nipomo project to her third-year design studio students as part of her Community Based Design Program. Students provide an important community service by being involved in real-world design projects, according to Yin.
"We were excited to see the variety and scope of the selected student designs and felt they fit well with Nipomo's architectural style," said Becky Crowe, Nipomo Recreation Association executive director.
Selected students are: Sarah Dapper, Danielle Carlson, Kimiko Kohno, Jamie Graves, Michelle Holst and Karen Kemp.
Tickets for "Cinco de Mayo Night Out on the Town" are $50 per person and $80 per couple and can be purchased by contacting Becky Crowe, Nipomo Recreation Association executive director, at 805-929-5437 or bcrowe@nipomorecreation.org.
