Arianna Huffington Opens Cal Poly’s Provocative Perspectives Series

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Arianna Huffington will open Cal Poly’s Provocative Perspectives speaker series on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. in Spanos Theater. Her talk, “A Political Update: Focus on California” will be followed by a question and answer period, as well as a book signing. The event is free and open to the public.

Hugffington’s presentation kicks off the 4th annual series which focuses on “California's Challenges: Provocative Solutions for Compelling Problems."

Cornel Morton, vice president for student affairs is delighted to have Huffington as a guest of the university. “We are focusing on California this year and the very real challenges that face us,” Morton said. “I believe that Arianna can address the issue of what role we as citizens can play in meeting those challenges.”

In 2006, Time magazine’s named Huffington one of the 100 most influential people in the world. She is a nationally syndicated columnist, author of ten books and co-founder and editor of HuffingtonPost.com. She is also co-host of “Left, Right and Center,” a public radio political roundtable program.

Huffington has also appeared on numerous TV shows, including Charlie Rose, Oprah, Nightline, Real Time with Bill Maher, Larry King Live, Hardball and Good Morning America.

No stranger to politics, Huffington’s parents were both members of the resistance movement against the Nazi occupation of Greece. Her father edited an underground newspaper, was caught by Nazi soldiers and spent the remainder of World War II in a German concentration camp.

At 16 she moved to England where she went on to attended Cambridge University earning a master’s degree in economics. At 21 she was named president of the famed debating society, the Cambridge Union.
