Cal Poly Wine, Viticulture Program to Hold Label Design Contest

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly’s Wine and Viticulture Program is sponsoring a label design contest with a grand prize of $500 in preparation for the release of its 2006 vintage wines, made from student-grown grapes by student winemakers.

The wine label contest is open to current Cal Poly students and graduates from the classes of 2004, 2005 and 2006. The winning label and artist will appear in the Cal Poly Wine and Viticulture newsletter and on its Web site.

Contest entries will be accepted from Dec. 1 until 5 p.m. Dec. 8. Participants may submit up to three entries. All entries must be submitted via e-mail to cafes@calpoly.edu and must be accompanied by a completed entry form. Entry form and official contest rules and guidelines are online at http://wvit.calpoly.edu.

About Cal Poly Wine
Cal Poly’s 2006 vintage will be available for purchase by alumni and friends of Cal Poly in late 2007. These wines will reflect the contributions and talents of Cal Poly wine and viticulture majors, said July Ackerman, development director for the program.

The 2006 vintage will be the first release from the new degree program, which began in 2005. Following Cal Poly’s learn-by-doing tradition, students are working on the 2006 vintage under the supervision of winemaker Christian Roguenant at Baileyana Winery in Edna Valley. The wines are being made using grapes grown in Cal Poly’s campus vineyards.
