Cal Poly Professor, Award-Winning Author Publishes Seventh Book in Series
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly Modern Languages and Literatures Professor Gloria Velasquez recently had a seventh novel published titled “Tyrone's Betrayal.”
The book is part of Velasquez’s Roosevelt High School series, which focuses on a group of multiracial teenagers who are confronted with a variety of social and cultural issues such as violence, sexuality and prejudice.
“Tyrone’s Betrayal,” published by Arte Publico Press, examines the problem of absentee fathers in the African-American community.
Velasquez is an award-winning poet, fiction writer and singer-songwriter. She came to Cal Poly in 1985, after earning a Ph.D. from Stanford University in Latin American
and Chicano literatures.
She has received numerous awards and honors. A song she wrote, “Son in Vietnam,” appeared in the PBS documentary “Soldados: Chicanos in Vietnam.” Velasquez appeared in the PBS documentary “La Raza de Colorado" in May 2005.
