Music Faculty Jazz Trio to Perform Nov. 16 

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Three Cal Poly jazz instructors will give a free jazz performance at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in Room 218 of the Davidson Music Center on campus.

Cal Poly Director of Jazz Studies Paul Rinzler will perform on the piano, Roy Main will play trombone, and Ken Hustad will play bass.

The trio will present a variety of tunes by Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Fats Waller and more.

Rinzler was the accompanist for a jazz choir recording titled “Hot IV” that was nominated for a Grammy award. He has been awarded several National Endowment of the Arts grants, including a Jazz Performance Grant.

Trombone choir director Main has performed at many major television and film studios and with numerous orchestras and bands, including Nelson Riddle, Henry Mancini, Michel Legrand, Bill Conti, Les Brown and Harry James. His motion picture, television and recording credits include performances with such great artists as Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Bob Hope and Tony Bennett.

Hustad is co-principal bassist for the San Luis Obispo Symphony and is a member of the Mozart Festival Orchestra. He plays with the Santa Barbara and Santa Maria symphonies, the Cuesta Master Chorale, Pacific Repertory Opera, San Luis Obispo Vocal Arts Ensemble, Cal Poly Baroque Orchestra, and the Tolosa Strings Quintet. He also plays in several Central Coast jazz groups.

The jazz concert is free and open to the public. The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly's Music Department and the College of Liberal Arts. For more information, contact the Music Department at 756-2406.
