Cal Poly City and Regional Planning Department to Host Design Symposium Oct. 20

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Cal Poly's City and Regional Planning Department will host the "Design of Public Spaces Symposium" Friday, Oct. 20, from 2 - 4:30 p.m. in the Architecture Building's Berg Gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

The symposium, developed to encourage debate on the quality of design of public spaces, will feature four guest speakers. Speakers and topics include:

  • Larry Herzog, professor, graduate program in city planning, San Diego State University, discussing "Return to the Center: Public Spaces in Spain and Mexico"

  • Leo O'Brian, vice president, landscape architecture, Irvine Community Development Co., discussing "Designing for Quality: The New Village of Woodbury, Irvine"

  • Daniel Levi, professor of environmental psychology, Cal Poly, discussing "Public Spaces in Thailand: Alternative Uses of Public Space"

  • Denise de Alcantara, doctoral candidate, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, discussing "Culture and Design: Revitalizing Historic Rio de Janeiro"
