Lecture on Landmark Case Commemorates Constitution Day at Cal Poly Nov. 2

SAN LUIS OBISPO - The public is invited to the second annual Constitution Day at Cal Poly and a free presentation by Kevin D. Brown, Professor of Law at Indiana University and a legal expert in the landmark United States Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education.

Professor Brown will speak on Nov. 2 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Spanos Theater on campus to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution.

His lecture is titled "The Re-Examination of Brown v Board of Education From the Perspective of the Post-Desegregation Era." Professor Brown will discuss the desegregation era from its juridical beginnings in 1954 with the unanimous Brown decision and subsequent Supreme Court decisions justifying racial classifications to remedy the harms inflicted by discriminatory practices of the past.

A frequent panelist and presenter at scholarly conferences across the country, Professor Brown has written numerous articles and book chapters on the convergence of law, education and race theory. He says his research interest is motivated by the effort to bridge the cultural gap that exists in American society among majority and minority populations.

Professor Brown received his B.S. at Indiana University in 1978 and his law degree at Yale University in 1982.

The event is free and open to the public.

The Constitution Day lecture is co-sponsored by the Cal Poly Office of the Provost, the College of Liberal Arts, the History Department and the Political Science Department.
