California Journalist to Discuss the ‘New California’ Nov. 16 in Second Lecture in Cal Poly’s Provocative Perspective Series

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Cal Poly’s Provocative Perspective series will continue to examine California’s challenges with Sacramento Bee journalist Peter Schrag during his Nov. 16  talk on  “The New California: America’s Future?”

Schrag will speak in the Vista Grande Café on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public and includes breakfast. Reservations are required. To reserve a seat, contact Liz Cofer at 756-0327 or lcofer@calpoly.edu.

Schrag, a lifelong journalist, has written about education and other public policy issues for more than 40 years. For 19 years, he was the editorial page editor of the Sacramento Bee, for which he still writes a weekly column. His most recent book, “Final Test: The Battle for Adequacy in America's Schools,” has just been issued with a new preface by New Press.  He is a visiting scholar at the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley, a member of the Board of Directors of EdSource, which analyzes and reports on California education issues, and on the Advisory Council of the Public Policy Institute of California.

 Schrag has published articles in the “Atlantic,” “Harper’s,” the “Nation,” the “New Republic,” the “New York Times,” “Playboy,” the “American Prospect” and other publications. His book, “Paradise Lost: California’s Experience, America’s Future,” published by the New Press in April 1998, was chosen as a “New York Times Notable Book.”
