Cal Poly Students Prepare Tax Returns for Underserved Communities

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Beginning Saturday, Jan. 28, Cal Poly Orfalea College of Business accounting seniors will prepare tax returns at no charge for individuals and families making less than $35,000 per year, as part of the annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Tax returns will be prepared in the third-floor computer lab, in the Business Building every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Visitors are asked to enter Cal Poly via Highland Avenue and follow the signs to the College of Business. Parking is free. Those participating are asked to bring 2004 tax returns and all 2005 tax-related documents, including child-care expenses, child-care provider identification number and phone number.

All tax returns will be prepared by qualified Cal Poly accounting seniors and will be reviewed by local certified tax preparers. Spanish-speaking preparers will be available to help serve the Latino community. Forms that will be prepared include 1040; 1040EZ; 1040A; 540; 540A; 540EZ and 2EZ, as well as some supporting forms.

The community service project helps community members and students avoid unnecessary tax fees and tax preparation costs.

The community service project concludes Saturday, March 11. For further information in English and Spanish, call 756-2667.
