Cal Poly Reopens Search for Provost
SAN LUIS OBISPO – President Warren J. Baker announced today
that Bill Harris, who had previously accepted an offer to serve
as Provost of Cal Poly, has withdrawn his acceptance.
Currently the Director General of Science Foundation Ireland, Harris
decided to withdraw after concluding that his experience and aspirations
to be involved with major research enterprises were ultimately not
a good fit with the provost’s position.
In explaining the reason for his withdrawal, Harris expressed appreciation
“for the consideration and courtesy” shown him throughout
the process and emphasized his “great respect for what Cal
Poly has accomplished.”
Harris, who has visited the campus several times, was due to begin
his appointment at Cal Poly by July 2006.
In accepting Harris’ withdrawal, President Baker said: “We
had looked forward to having Bill Harris join Cal Poly, but understand
and respect his decision. We are fortunate that Bob Detweiler has
agreed to remain as Interim Provost and Academic Vice President
pending the appointment of a new Provost. Under his continued leadership,
I expect Cal Poly to continue to thrive.”
“The University will resume the search for a provost immediately,”
Baker said.
