Human Powered Vehicle Challenge Comes to
Cal Poly April 28-30
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly will host the Human Powered Vehicle
Challenge, West Coast Competition, Friday, April 28 through Sunday,
April 30.
The event is sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
and is hosted by the Cal Poly Human Powered Vehicle Club. ASME sponsors
the Human Powered Vehicle Competition in hopes of finding a design
that can be used for everyday activities.
Cal Poly is one of only three schools that have raced in each ASME
competition. Cal Poly has been and remains one of the top contenders
in the collegiate races, placing in the top four spots for both
the sprints and the endurance race in four of the last five years.
Human Powered Vehicles are aerodynamic and highly engineered, some
achieving speeds over 60 mph. The competition addresses engineering
problem-solving, and the vehicles are judged on design, safety and
performance. Participants prepare a comprehensive design report
in the first stage of the competition. Stage two includes design
presentation and performance events, where the vehicles race against
one another.
There are three different vehicle classes: single rider, multi-person
and practical. The rider (or riders) can be in upright, prone or
recumbent positions. The practical vehicle emphasizes usefulness
for daily activities. Vehicles must negotiate a slalom course while
carrying packages, going over bumps, potholes or other obstacles,
also stopping at signs and obeying the rules of the road. The single
and tandem vehicles compete in sprint and endurance events.
Friday is the day for registration, presentations, the safety test
and inspections from 3 - 9:30 p.m. at the Fisher Science Building.
Saturday will feature sprint racing, 6:30 a.m.-noon, and utility
vehicles, 12:30- 3 p.m. The endurance race is 8:30-11a.m. Sunday,
followed by the awards barbecue at noon. For more information and
