Cal Poly's College of Architecture and Environmental Design Open House Events

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Students of Cal Poly's College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) will host a number of free, public events during the university's Open House, "Cal Poly: Choice of Champions," Friday and Saturday, April 21-22.

This year's activities include futuristic exhibits, shuttle rides up Poly Canyon to view the Design Village Competition, tours of Cal Poly's award-winning Solar House, and a chance to reminisce with former classmates.

Event highlights include:

Friday, April 21

  • The Alpha Rho Chi student club and CAED Ambassadors will host tours of the college, 1 to 4 p.m.
  • A variety of student displays will be set up in the CAED Berg Gallery.
  • Lisa Iwomoto will speak as part of the Hearst Lecture Series, 4 to 6 p.m.; Business Building Rotunda, Room 213.
  • The City and Regional Planning Department will host Digital Cities, a presentation about how technology relates to cities, urban life and everyday experiences, 1:30 to 2 p.m. Dexter Building, Room 249.
  • Cal Poly's Solar House will be on display from 1 to 5 p.m. in the H-1 parking lot on Mount Bishop Rd. off of Highland Drive. The student-designed house won third place in the 2005 National Solar Decathlon Competition in Washington, D.C.
  • 3-D Immersive World Making, an interdisciplinary project that was developed from courses in architecture, computer science, English and media arts, will be on display in the Kennedy Library Room 216B from 2 to 4 p.m.
  • Design Village 2006, "GO CONVERTIBLE: The Essence of Switch-Rich Architecture," begins as students from all over California carry their design materials up Poly Canyon to build and live in their self-designed shelters.

Saturday, April 22

  • The Alpha Rho Chi student club and CAED Ambassadors will host tours of the college, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • The college will host an open house and alumni welcome, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Room 212 of the Architecture and Environmental Design Building.
  • Architectural Engineering Alumni Luncheon by "reservation only" from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Engineering West Courtyard.
  • City and Regional Planning Alumni Reception, open to the public, from 2 to 3 p.m. on the second floor near Room 251 of the Dexter Building.
  • The Construction Management Department will present educational and heavy equipment displays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Engineering West, Room 120A and in front of the Kennedy Library.
  • The Landscape Architecture Department will present student exhibits from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Dexter Building and other locations.
  • The City and Regional Planning Department will host a noise workshop and demonstration at 11:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. in the Dexter Building, Room 134.
  • Cal Poly's Solar House display continues from 1 to 4 p.m. in the H-1 parking lot on Mount Bishop Rd. off of Highland Drive.
  • 3-D Immersive World Making continues 2 to 4 p.m. in the Kennedy Library Room 216B.
  • Design Village Competition 2006, "GO CONVERTIBLE: The Essence of Switch-Rich Architecture" display opens for public view with free shuttles rides up Poly Canyon from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The awards ceremony begins Sunday at 11 a.m.
