Cal Poly to Host CubeSat Developers’ Workshop April 27-29

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Reporters and photographers are invited to meet students, faculty and industry representatives from around the world and see the latest developments in small satellite technology on Thursday, April 27, the first day of the three-day CubeSat Workshop at Cal Poly.

The Cal Poly CubeSat Project started in 1999 as a collaborative effort between Cal Poly and Stanford University’s Space Systems Development Laboratory to provide standards for the design of picosatellites. As a result, the very small satellites are being built by students at universities around the world. Picosatellites, or CubeSats, are launched using a common deployer known as a “P-POD,” developed at Cal Poly.

What: CubeSat Developers’ Workshop

Who: Dozens of students and faculty from Cal Poly and more than 20 other universities from around the world, as well as international industry representatives, will share ideas and their own personal experiences in developing picosatellites. Discussions will include the status and availability of launch vehicles, new technology and communication advances. Attendees will come from the U.S., Germany, France, Japan, Turkey, Taiwan, Romania and Columbia.

Participants will have CubeSats on display. Many groups will use the workshop to do final sizing and standardizing in preparation for an upcoming CubeSat launch, scheduled for June 28, at Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. See www.cubesat.org.
