College of Architecture and Environmental
Design Faculty, Students
to Compete In Furniture Design Contest
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Vellum, a San Luis Obispo home furnishings and design showroom, is hosting its second annual design competition, gallery exhibit and silent auction to benefit Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design.
The College of Architecture and Environmental Design/Vellum competition, now under way, is open to all CAED students and faculty members. It challenges the participants to create furniture from concept to finish. The designs must be original and fabricated by an individual or team. Entries will be judged on function, individuality, beauty and production.
Vellum will host an artists’ reception Friday, Oct. 14, 6-10 p.m., at 848 Monterey Street. The results of the judging will be announced at the reception. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
The winning entries will be displayed at the 848 Monterey Street location from Friday, Oct. 14 through Saturday, Oct. 15. The winning entries can be seen at the Vellum showroom, 672 Higuera St., from Oct. 16 – 21. During that time a silent auction will be held. The public may bid on some entries by phone or in person during store hours. The store is open 10 a.m-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. The auction will end at 7 p.m. Oct. 21. Proceeds from the event will support this year’s competition, create seed money for next year’s contest and go toward student cash awards.
Cal Poly architecture professors Tom Di Santo and Laura Joines-Novotny are helping Vellum organize the event. “This furniture show is an opportunity to see that the range of thought for architects from furniture to architecture is a seamless transition, from touching the smallest detail to sensing the movement of a body in space,” Joines-Novotny said.
“We are motivated to inspire creativity and to challenge students and faculty to press the boundaries of material and design,” said Paul Abbott, co-owner of Vellum.
