Cal Poly Music Department Announces Upcoming Events;
Multiple-Ticket Discounts Offered

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly Music Department’s 2005-2006 season has something for everybody, with programs to suit musical tastes ranging from classical and jazz to big bands and barbershop quartets. Patrons who buy season tickets to four events will receive a 10 percent discount; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.

Mezzo-soprano Jacalyn Kreitzer and pianist Susan Azaret Davies will kick off the season at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, in the Spanos Theatre. The program, titled “Orchestral Solos for Mezzo-Soprano,” will include works from Gioacchino Rossini’s “Stabat Mater,” Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Magnificat,” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “C Minor Mass,” Hector Berlioz’ “Romeo et Juliette,” Leonard Bernstein’s “Jeremiah Symphony,” Sergei Prokofiev’s “Alexander Nevsky,” and Richard Strauss’ “Four Last Songs.” Tickets are $6 for seniors and students and $10 for the public.

Next up is the University Jazz Band’s Swing Dance concert at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in Chumash Auditorium. The band’s concert continues a two-year tradition of playing swing-era tunes to dance by. Free dance lessons will be offered from 7 to 8 p.m., and the music continues until 11 p.m. for those wanting to dance and those wanting to simply listen. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for the public. Additional swing dance concerts are planned for Friday, Jan. 20 and Friday, May 19. (This event is not part of the multiple-ticket discount program, and tickets are sold at the door.)

The public is invited to meet the 2005-2006 choirs during their Fall Debut Concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct.29, in Harman Hall in the Cohan Center. The choirs, featuring PolyPhonics and The University Singers, open their 2005-06 season with a wide variety of choral works. The repertoire includes masterworks from the 16th century to today. Cal Poly’s barbershop quartets, as well as student soloists, are also slated to perform. Tickets are $8 for students, $12 and $14 for seniors, $13 and $15 for the public.

“Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue” is the title of Bandfest ’05, set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in Harman Hall. The concert is billed as a festive and rousing season-opener featuring the Cal Poly Wind Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and the Pride of the Pacific Mustang Marching Band performing its traditional stadium halftime highlights. Tickets are $8 for students, $13 and $15 for seniors, and $15 and $18 for the public.

The Cal Poly Symphony’s Fall Concert, titled “Inspired by Mountains,” will be at 8 p.m.. Saturday, Nov. 19, in Harman Hall. The symphony’s season opens with two musical responses to the natural world: Alan Hovhaness’ Symphony No. 2, “Mysterious Mountain,” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, “Pastorale.” Tickets are $6 for students, $8 and $10 for seniors, and $10 and $12 for the public.

To help get in the holiday mood, the Cal Poly Choirs will present their annual “A Christmas Celebration” concert at 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3, in Harman Hall. Joining PolyPhonics and The University Singers will be the Cal Poly Brass Ensemble. Holiday favorites and a carol sing-a-long are all part of the holiday fun. This traditional event sells out quickly, so early reservations are suggested. Tickets are $10 for students, $16 and $19 for seniors, and $17 and $20 for the public.

Cal Poly’s Music Department will wrap-up its fall quarter offerings with several free student vocal, piano and instrumental recitals, as well as a free performance by the Cal Poly Trombone Choir at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at Farmers’ Market at the corner of Chorro and Higuera streets.
