Cal Poly Irrigation Tech Professors’ Book Making Waves in Europe

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Two Cal Poly professors who wrote the book on irrigation technology will soon have it published in Europe -- in five languages.

The Cal Poly Irrigation Training and Research Center has joined forces with the education division of the European Irrigation Association to translate, publish and distribute “Drip and Micro Irrigation for Trees, Vines, and Row Crops” by Cal Poly professors Charles Burt and Stuart Styles, originally published by Cal Poly’s ITRC.

Burt and Styles’ book is already recognized as one of the best resources on the subject of drip irrigation for agriculture in the United States. The European edition will be updated to include a guide to designing microspray and drip irrigation systems for orchards and vineyards as well as permanent row crops. Sections in the publication cover water requirements, selection of emitter spacing and block sizes, efficiency and uniformity of systems, allowable pressure differences, hose design, pressure regulation strategies, filtration, and chemical injections.

“We’re excited about this opportunity to reach out to the European irrigation industry with the most up-to-date drip design techniques,” said Styles, director of Cal Poly’s ITRC.

“Drip and Micro Irrigation for Trees, Vines, and Row Crops” will be available in English, Spanish, Italian, German and Dutch. For more information, contact Styles at sstyles@calpoly.edu.
