Cal Poly Chapter of Wheelchair Foundation to Kick Off 2006 Fund-Raising Campaign With Screening of "Sleepy Hollow" Oct. 27

SAN LUIS OBISPO - The Wheelchair Foundation, Cal Poly Chapter will kick-off this year's fund-raising effort with a showing of "Sleepy Hollow" starring Johnny Depp, on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m. at the Fremont Theatre in downtown San Luis Obispo . Tickets are $5 and the event is open to the public.

The chapter hopes to raise $44,000 this year to send 560 wheelchairs to children and adults in Belize .

Several events are planned between now and April 1 when the chapter will host the Gift of Mobility Benefit, a gala dinner with live and silent auctions at The Cliffs Resort in Pismo Beach.

Last year the group raised approximately $36,000 to purchase, ship and distribute 280 wheelchairs to Guatemalan children and adults. In September, chapter advisor and Marketing Professor Lynn Metcalf, along with 10 Chapter alumni, went to Guatemala to deliver the wheelchairs.

The group spent six days traveling, distributing wheelchairs and meeting wheelchair recipients. The group also distributed new socks, shoes and other personal items to a school on a coffee plantation in Montijo. They also gave away clothes, toys and art supplies to an orphanage for girls in Antigua, an infant and toddler orphanage in Guatemala City , and a library in San Miguel Duenas.

The Cal Poly group is also accepting individual donations; $75 will send a wheelchair to someone in need in Belize .
