Cal Poly CommUnity Pride Week is May 18-22
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly’s Pride Alliance and Gays, Lesbian, Bisexuals United will present “CommUnity Pride '05” May 18-22.
CommUnity Pride is an annual series of events that raise awareness and help educate about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
Pride events are traditionally held nationally in June to celebrate the diversity of the LGBT community and to celebrate individuals within the LGBT community, said Maya Andlig, Director of Gender and Sexuality Programs in the university’s Student Life and Leadership office.
Events are free and open to the general public. Community Pride ’05 events include:
• Wednesday, May 18: Terry Brewer, inspirational speaker,
6 p.m., Chumash Auditorium. Brewer will speak on “Christianity
and Being LGBT.”
• Thursday, May 19: “Pride in the Plaza,” 11 a.m.
to noon, University Union Plaza, with a performance by a drag troupe.
• Friday, May 20: Free barbecue and comedy performance, 5-8
p.m., Performing Arts Center’s Philips Hall. Comedy performance
by Shann Carr begins at 7 p.m.
• Saturday, May 21: Youth and student empowerment conference,
10 a.m. to 3 p.m., second floor, University Union. The conference
is free to youth and students and will include keynote speakers
Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon. Martin and Lyon are the founders of
Daughters of Bilitis (DOB), the first national lesbian political
and social organization in the United States. Other speakers include
Nancy Jean Tubbs, director of the University of California at Riverside
LGBT Center, Jason Davidson, professor of forensics and communications
at USC, and Erica Newport from LYRIC, a San Francisco-based center
for LGBT youth under 23.
