Cal Poly to Present Mozart's 'The Impresario'

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly music students will give four performances of Mozart's one-act comic opera "The Impresario" at 7:30 and 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, March 31-April 1, in the Spanos Theatre.

The opera has double casts and understudies to allow more students to participate, said Jacalyn Kreitzer, the opera's producer and a Cal Poly voice, performance and diction teacher.

"It's set in late 18th-century Salzburg, where two operatic divas vie for attention and top billing from the world-weary impresario Mr. Scruples. When they arrive to audition at the same time, the cat-fight begins," said Kreitzer in describing the plot of the department's second annual opera production.

The cast includes students Carson Britz and James Huang as Mr. Scruples, the "tired impresario"; Paul Fishman, Bob Lawson and Gabe Bondoc as Mr. Bluff, the opera-star "wanna be"; Martin Garona, Patrick Little and Trevor Gililland as Mr. Angel, the wealthy financier; Lauren Groff, Rachael Beckner and Chloe Gill as Madame Goldentrill, the aging disdainful diva; and Jessica Reed, Shaina Stevens and Amanda Tredger as Silverpeal, the aspring, young and gorgeous opera star.

Members of the Cal Poly Symphony will also perform, under the baton of David Arrivee.

The performances are co-directed by music faculty member Katherine Arthur. The set and props are provided by Howard Gee and the Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department; costumes are done by Cynthia Vest, longtime choral participant and costume assistant with the Pacific Repertory Opera; and make-up by former Cal Poly music major Laura Pryzgoda.

Tickets are $6 for students and senior citizens and $10 for the public. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekends.
To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787); to order by fax, dial 756-6088.

The performances are sponsored by the Cal Poly Music Department and College of Liberal Arts and supported in part by local donors. Call the Music Department at 756-2406 for more information.
