Cal Poly Professor Named ASAE Fellow
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly Professor Emeritus John L. Merriam has been named a fellow of the American Society for of Agricultural Engineers.
Merriam is a professor emeritus in the Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering department in Cal Poly's College of Agriculture. He was inducted as a fellow during a ceremony July 19 at the 2005 ASAE annual international meeting in Tampa, Fla.
For more than 60 years, Merriam has been involved in irrigation and water management issues as a researcher, educator, consultant, and philanthropic program contributor. He has long been actively involved in consulting, educational activities and philanthropic programs involving irrigation and water management underdeveloped nations. His work has taken him to Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Egypt and China. He holds two patents in irrigation technology.
During his career, Merriam has also received honors including the Conservationist of the Year award from the Soil Conservation Society of America, Man of the Year from the California Irrigation Institute and the Kishida International Award from ASAE.
Merriam now joins only two percent of ASAE members who have been designated as fellows of the society. To be considered, nominees must demonstrate unusual professional distinction, outstanding qualifications and experience in the field of agricultural engineering, and have 20 or more years experience in the profession or teaching of agricultural engineering and 20 or more years of membership in ASAE.
