Cal Poly's Music Department Joins Local Businesses in Tsunami Relief Effort
San Luis Obispo -- The Cal Poly Music Department will join forces with the San Luis Obispo business community Saturday, Feb. 12, to raise funds for tsunami disaster relief. One-half of the proceeds raised at its benefit concert "A Night at the Mission," will go to BIZ4RELIEF.COM.
The benefit concert was originally intended to help raise funds for more than 60 Cal Poly choir members and the Cal Poly Wind Ensemble to travel to Europe for a 16-day concert tour in July 2006. Now, the Cal Poly Music Department will donate half the proceeds from the concert to BIZ4RELIEF.COM, a relief effort for the South Asia disaster, organized by San Luis Obispo business owner Aaron Steed, co-owner of Meathead Movers, Inc.
Numerous businesses have teamed up to support the effort by donating a portion of the proceeds derived from the sale of their goods or services. All donations will go to www.directrelief.com, an international nonprofit organization.
The benefit concert begins at 8 p.m. and will feature nine different Cal Poly ensembles. Music selections will include works from Claude Arrieu, Robert Washburn, Gordon Jacob, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Fisher Tull, Craig Kingsbury, Maurice Ravel, Johann Sebastian Bach, and J. Christensen. Also included are several traditional and contemporary works.
BIZ4RELIEF.COM is also sponsoring a concert of four local rock bands at the SLO County Vets Hall at 801 Grand Avenue in San Luis Obispo. The rock concert is Saturday, Feb.12, 4 to 9 p.m. Admission is $25 and includes food.
Tickets to the Feb. 12 "A Night at the Mission" benefit concert are $8 to $10 and can be purchased at the Performing Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. To order tickets by phone, call 756-2787 (SLO-ARTS). Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
