Cal Poly Music Ensembles to Perform Benefit Chamber Concert at Mission
SAN LUIS OBISPO - Nine of Cal Poly's finest student ensembles will give a benefit chamber music concert at 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 12 in the Old Mission Church in San Luis Obispo.
PolyPhonics, the Trombone Choir, Trombone Quartet, Clarinet Ensemble, Woodwind Quintet, Euphonium Quartet, Brass Choir and Brass Quintets will present "A Night at the Mission." The benefit concert will help raise funds for more than 60 Cal Poly choir members and the Cal Poly Wind Ensemble to travel to Europe for a 16-day concert tour in July 2006.
PolyPhonics, a 57-voice choral ensemble led by Music Professor Meredith Brammeier, will begin the program with several selections "designed to fill the Old Mission Church with rich opening sounds," according to Music Professor William Johnson.
Music selections include works from Claude Arrieu, Robert Washburn, Gordon Jacob, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Fisher Tull, Craig Kingsbury, Maurice Ravel, Johann Sebastian Bach, and J. Christensen. Also included are several traditional and contemporary works.
The Choir, Wind Ensemble and four soloists will perform in Hungary, Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic. Stops on the tour include Budapest, Vienna, Schladming, Salzburg, Munich, Karlovy Vary and Prague.
Cal Poly Choir members and the Cal Poly Wind Ensemble were invited to perform at the opening concert for the annual Mid-Europe Conference for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. They will also perform at a major European conference for wind band conductors, composers, publishers and performers, and give public performances throughout the tour.
The group must raise $357,000 by spring 2006; to date $218,500 has been raised. Cal Poly students still need to raise $138,000 to realize their goal.
Tickets to the Feb. 12 "A Night at the Mission" benefit concert are $8 to $10 and can be purchased at the Performing Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. To order tickets by phone, call 756-2787 (SLO-ARTS). Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
Private donations are also welcome. Persons contributing $3,000 or more will be listed as “Sponsor” in the ensembles' printed programs for this season and next season. Contributions of this size support one or more participating students. Other sponsor levels include “Gold Circle” - $2,000-2,999, “Conductors Circle” - $1,000-$1,999, “Benefactor” - $500-$999, “Patron” - $100-$499, “Friend” - $25-$99.
