Cal Poly Announces Second Finalist in Athletics Director Search
SAN LUIS OBISPO - Cal Poly has announced that Alison Cone is the second finalist in the search for a new athletics director. Cone has served as interim director of athletics at Cal Poly for the past year and has worked in the university Intercollegiate Athletics department since 1994 when she was hired as senior associate director.
“Alison has provided strong leadership in Intercollegiate
Athletics since her appointment as interim director, and well before
that,” said Larry Kelley, chair of the search committee. “Her
strengths include an awareness of and involvement in NCAA and
conference issues, knowledge of the Cal Poly community, and dedication
to the academic and athletic goals of the students and programs
at Cal Poly. The search committee has been impressed with her experience
and ability and looks forward to learning even more about her in
the interview process.”
The search committee will host Cone at an open campus forum
on Thursday, Jan. 13,
2-3 p.m., in Cal Poly’s University Union, Room 220.
Cone was chosen as part of an ongoing national search that so far has drawn more than 70 applicants. The search committee will continue to accept applications until the position is filled, Kelley said.
Cone earned a master’s degree in education from Cal State Dominguez Hills and a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University. Before coming to Cal Poly, she was director of athletic academic services at Washington State University and, prior to that, served as athletic academic coordinator at Cal State Fullerton.
Steven P. Holton, former athletics director at Northern Arizona University, was named a finalist last November. The new director will succeed John McCutcheon, who accepted a similar position at the University of Massachusetts last year after serving 12 years at Cal Poly.
