Cal Poly Concert Will Offer 'Courtly Love, Cabaret and a Side of Barber' on Feb. 6
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Cal Poly Music Department will present "Courtly Love, Cabaret and a Side of Barber," at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, in the Spanos Theatre.
Featuring faculty member Katherine Arthur, soprano, and pianist William Terrence Spiller, chair of the department, the program will include works by Samuel Barber, Franz Liszt, and the complete "Brettl-Lieder"(Cabaret Songs) of Arnold Schoenberg. The cabaret songs will be sung "Marlene Dietrich-style" with top hat and tails.
Arthur, a certified Alexander Technique teacher, began teaching voice at Cal Poly in fall 2003. She has appeared as a guest artist in Europe, performed for many international music festivals, and recorded works for Austrian Radio
On the Central Coast she has appeared as a soloist with the Southwest Chamber Music Ensemble, Santa Barbara Oratorio Society and Pacific Repertory Opera.
She earned a master's degree in voice from UC Santa Barbara, where she studied with Elisabeth Mannion and Michael Ingham.
Spiller, a prize-winner in international piano competitions, was recognized as the outstanding doctoral graduate of 1991 by the University of Southern California's School of Music. He has performed across the United States as soloist, recitalist, chamber musician and accompanist.
He earned degrees in piano performance from the University of Washington, Indiana University and USC.
Tickets to the recital are $6 for students and senior citizens and $10 for the public. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Tickets can be ordered by calling SLO-ARTS (756-2787). Order on-line at www.pacslo.org.
