Cal Poly Poultry Science Student Takes Top Awards in International Forum

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Three Cal Poly Poultry Science undergraduate students
earned recognition at the International Poultry Scientific Forum in
Atlanta in January.

Three students made presentations to forum judging panels Jan. 24 and 25 on their senior project research: Annika Hoffman of Watsonville and Jacob Olson of San Jose, both Cal Poly animal science undergrad students, and Phil Bass of Ferndale.

Bass graduated in December with a
bachelor’s degree in animal science from Cal Poly and is now a graduate student in the College of Agriculture.

Though they presented their undergraduate research projects, the three were allowed to participate in a competition for graduate students.

Hoffman took a first place award at the poster forum for her work on
avian physiology. The students attended the forum along with advisor and
Cal Poly Foster Farms Poultry Science Professor Elizabeth Koutsos.

“I was congratulated several times in Atlanta on the caliber of my
‘grad’ students,” Koutsos said.

Hoffman’s winning poster illustrated efficient and reliable ways to measure inflammation in broiler poultry.

Bass made an oral presentation
on the use of phytase enzyme in laying hen diets. Olson entered the poster competition with an illustration of the incorporation of lycopene
into eggs.
