Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department to Stage ‘Macbeth’
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s Theatre and Dance Department will stage William Shakespeare’s best-known tragedy, “Macbeth,” Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 24-26 and March 3-5. All performances will be at 8 p.m. in the Spanos Theatre on campus.
”Seduction by greed and power drive one man to commit one horrible act after another,” said director and assistant professor Josh Machamer in describing the play. “The killing of a king, the death of close friends, and the massacre of many people are just a small part of the destructive path that this classical play features.
“The concept of the play revolves around a contemporary slant, look and feel – and combines with the classical attributes of the play. With a lean script and 14 actors, the play explores the psychological attributes of this murderer’s maddening dilemma,” Machamer said.
In addition to the faculty and staff of the Theatre and Dance Department, the production team also includes Diana Stanton, a dance teacher at Cal Poly and at the World Rhythm and Motion Dance Studio in San Luis Obispo, who serves as movement director.
Also Patricia Troxel, an English professor who teaches Shakespeare at Cal Poly and directs productions at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Santa Maria, supports the production as a dramaturge (a scholar who speaks on behalf of the playwright).
A sound design was created especially for the production by students
in the Music Department’s sound design course.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for senior citizens and students.
