21st Annual Cal Poly Western Bonanza Junior
Livestock Show
Set for Feb. 18-20 in Paso Robles
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA – More than 500 students from across
the West --
and more than 1,000 livestock animals -- will compete for more than
$50,000 in prizes at Cal Poly’s 21st Annual Western Bonanza
Junior
Livestock Show over the President’s Day Weekend.
Western Bonanza is a nonprofit junior livestock show for entrants
from
nine to 19 years old. It was originally created as part of a Cal
Poly
senior project in 1984. The event has evolved into one of the largest
junior livestock shows in the West.
Western Bonanza 2005 will be held Friday through Sunday, Feb. 18-20,
at
the California Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles. The show begins
at
8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and admission is free.
“Due to the increase in corporate and general sponsorships
for this
year’s show, we have been able to change our format and increase
the
awards budget substantially,” said Cal Poly Animal Science
Professor
Wendy Hall.
Western Bonanza sponsors have made it possible to award iPODs,
silver
belt buckles, one-of-a-kind jackets and many more prizes. In addition
to
prizes, every exhibitor at the show receives a “Western Bonanza”
T-shirt
to commemorate the weekend. “We are thrilled to provide such
outstanding awards to the exhibitors this year,” said Lindsay
Buckner,
student awards chairman.
Show categories include lamb, goat, steer, heifer, hog, cattle
fitting,
and a scholarship competition.
