Cal Poly Again a Hispanic Outlook 'Publisher's Pick'

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly has again been named to the national "Publisher's Picks" list by the magazine Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education.

Cal Poly is among 19 California State University campuses to make the annual list, issued by the magazine in late November. The 'Publisher's Picks' list recognizes universities which "are doing a commendable job of recruiting, retaining, educating and graduating Hispanics," according to the magazine.

"It is an honor to be recognized, but it's our Hispanic students who really deserve the most recognition," said Interim Provost Robert Detweiler. "We are committed to offering an excellent education to all of our students, and to helping them go on to success in their careers in California and beyond."

Other CSU campuses named to the list for 2005 are Dominguez Hills, Fresno, Fullerton, Hayward, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Monterey Bay, Northridge, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, San Marcos and Stanislaus.

In May, Cal Poly was among 18 CSU campuses named to this year's 'Top 100' list compiled by Hispanic Outlook in Education for awarding degrees to Hispanic students. The magazine compiles the list after reviewing data provided by the National Center for Education Statistics. Cal Poly ranked No. 49.

Cal Poly is currently among the top universities in the nation in awarding undergraduate degrees in agriculture to Hispanic students. Among Cal Poly's many clubs are several Hispanic cultural and instructional clubs, including the award-winning Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. The SHPE chapter this year earned first place in a national design competition -- for the third consecutive year.

Among Cal Poly's many other active student clubs are the Hispanic Business Student Association, Latinos in Agriculture, La Comision Estudiantil, and MEXA (Movimiento Estudiantil Xicano de Aztlan). The university also offers a full range of programming through its Multicultural Center.
