'Polly Troutnic' Is University's Trout About Downtown

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly has sponsored a five-foot copper and fiberglass steelhead trout sculpture as part of the "Trout About Downtown" public art display in downtown San Luis Obispo.

The university's entry, "Polly Troutnic" is one of 21 five-foot steelhead trout sculptures currently on display downtown. The trout were unveiled at Farmer's Market April 21 and will be on display through Aug. 26.

The display is a fundraiser for Prado Day Center, a local daytime service center for the homeless and hungry in San Luis Obispo. In August, trout sculptures will be auctioned and the proceeds donated to the Prado Day Center.

Polly was designed by local artist Rebecca Clarkson and is located on the southwest corner of Higuera at Broad Street. She was designed with copper scales which will patina to a verdant green allowing her to age into her alma mater’s colors gracefully.

Each Trout was sponsored by a local business and cost between $1,000 and $3,000 depending on the level of sponsorship. Most businesses commissioned artists to complete the trout. The trout represent the native inhabitants of San Luis Creek.

Trout About Downtown is a collaboration of the City of San Luis Obispo, Friends of Prado Day Center, the Downtown Association, the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce, and the local arts community- including the SLO Arts Council and the SLO Art Center.

Maps of trout locations and information on the artists will be available at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, local hotel and motel lobbies, or online at www.VisitSLO.com.
