Kennedy Library Assistant Dean Selected 2005 UCLA Senior Fellow

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Mary Somerville, assistant dean of information and instructional services at Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library, has been selected a 2005 Senior Fellow at UCLA.

Somerville was one of 15 leaders in the college and university library field to be appointed, following a nationwide competition at the UCLA Graduate School of Information Studies. She and the other fellows will attend a three-week program at UCLA this summer.

At the Kennedy Library, Somerville is in charge of the information and instructional activities of subject specialist librarians working with faculty and students across campus. She has also promoted partnerships with the Boeing Corp. and the Luleå University of Technology, Sweden to incorporate “systems thinking” in the workplace.

Somerville came to Cal Poly in 2003 from Northern Arizona University, where she was development director for the arts. Her research interests include information systems design and organizational leadership.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in American Studies from Hamline University in 1971; a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Hawaii in 1972, an M.A. degree in women's studies from Goddard College in 1977, and a Ph.D. in information systems design from the Union Institute and University in 1986.
