Cal Poly To Host 6th Annual Philosophy Colloquium

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Cal Poly’s Philosophy Department will host its annual colloquium Thursday, April 21, with a series of talks on topics on philosophical literature and religious studies. The daylong event will begin at 9 a.m. and run to approximately 8:30 p.m. in Cal Poly’s University Union, Room 220. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

The speakers are Cal Poly students, faculty and noted expert Christopher Fauske, assistant dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Salem State University in Massachusetts. He is the author of “Jonathan Swift and the Church of Ireland, 1710-1724” and has edited a collection of essays “William King and the Anglican Irish Context, 1688-1729.”

Fauske will kick off session I at 9 a.m. with a talk about “George Berkeley’s ‘Physical’ Immaterialism with Thoughts on His Friendship with Jonathan Swift.”

Session II is scheduled at11 a.m. and will feature Billy Dunaway, a senior philosophy student, who will present “‘Ostrich Nominalism’ and Ontological Commitment.”

Cal Poly Philosophy Professor Rachel Fern will speak on “Interpreting Written and Moral Responsibility” in Session III at 1:30 p.m.

Session IV begins at 3 p.m. with Daniel Fogal, a philosophy senior, who will discuss “Free Will and Moral Responsibility: A Reply to Fischer.”

Fauske will discuss his book, “Side by side in a small country: Bishop John Frederick MacNeice and Ireland,” in the last session at 7 p.m.
