U.S. Forest Service Documentary "The
Greatest Good"
Showing at Cal Poly April 14
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly will host a free screening of "The Greatest Good," a documentary about the history of the U.S. Forest Service, April 14.
The event runs from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in room 286 of the Fisher Science Building (Building 33), and is sponsored by the university's Natural Resources Management Department and Xi Sigma Pi, the forestry honorary society.
Art Gaffrey, forest supervisor of Sequoia National Forest, will offer a special introduction to the documentary, which was made to commemorate the Forest Service's 100-year anniversary.
The film looks at the agency's 100 years of existence balancing public and private interests regarding the nation's forest lands. The film takes its title from the philosophy popularized by the agency's first chief, Gifford Pinchot. In 1905, Pinchot urged for the resolution of conflicts over public lands through finding "the greatest good for the greatest number in the long run."
