Cal Poly Juried Student Exhibit on Display Through May 1

SAN LUIS OBISPO – “The Waiting Room,” Cal Poly’s annual juried student exhibit featuring a range of media, will be on display in the University Art Gallery from April 8 to May 1. The exhibit features the work of Cal Poly students in four categories: two-dimensional studio, three-dimensional studio, graphic design, photography and freelance.

“I’m always excited and amazed by what the students produce -- this show is one of the best I’ve seen in quality of imagination, execution and design,” said gallery coordinator Barbara Morningstar.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the jurors’ picks for the best work in each area during the opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 8. The public is invited. The winners, all art and design majors except Michael Campbell, an architecture major, are:

Two-dimensional studio:
• First prize: Richard “Trevor” Lloyd for his piece titled “Book 1.” Lloyd is a resident of Etna.
• Second prize: Steve Leineweber, “Emerica,” Portland, Ore.
• Honorable mention: Michael Campbell, “Apriori,” Hemet.

Three-dimensional studio:
• First prize: John Tatum, “Cup with Glass,” Sequim, Wash.
• Second prize: Jake Brancheau,“Owed to Ed” chess set, Boulder, Colo.
• Honorable mention: Richard Trevor Lloyd (first-place prize winner in the two-dimensional studio category) and Garet Zook, “IMA Era.” Zook is from Ventura.

Photography:
• First prize: Jillian Kliewer, “Bahman,” Dixon.
• Second prize: Nathan Mohle, “Peanut Butter & Jelly,” San Luis Obispo.
• Honorable mention: Kate Sawyer, “Fear,” Redding.

Graphic Design:
• First prize: David Stychno, “Leave it to Chance Series,” Sebastopol.
• Second prize: Paul Barrett, “Yomega,” Mission Viejo.
• Honorable mentions: Robert Little, “Eco Fashion,” Los Angeles; Sara Schultz, “Ecological,” San Ramon; Tyler Aaron Ichien, “Fossil Annual Report,” Los Gatos; Byron Hoffman, “Tiger Balm,” Napa; Ali Golden, “SFMOMA Glamour Posters,” Ventura; Jessica Curtis, “Naked Juice,” Atascadero; and Danny Roberts, “Untitled #3,” Fresno.

Best of Show:
• John Tatum, “left and right hemispheres of a dyslexic.” Tatum also won first place in the three-dimensional studio category.

This year’s judges were New Times writer Glen Starkey, Randy and Lisa Stromsoe of Stromsoe Studios, Deborah Denker of Deborah Denker Photography, and Lynne Biddinger of 20-20 Design.

The University Art Gallery is in the Dexter Building, Room 171. Gallery hours for the exhibit are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. For more information, contact gallery curator Barbara Morningstar at 756-1571.
