Cal Poly Students Vote Down A Proposal for Increased Fees
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly students voted down a proposal to increase Associated Students, Inc. fees to expand and add new student facilities; a separate measure to raise fees to fund more club activities lost narrowly, by a margin of 75 votes.
The total vote count after two days of balloting April 20 and 21 was 5,302 – approximately 32 percent of the student population. The vote on the facility referendum was 1,969 "yes" (37 percent) and 3,333 "no" (63 percent).
ASI Student Government asked Cal Poly students to approve an initial facilities fee increase of $21 per quarter effective fall 2005 with incremental increases over the next six years that would have totaled $175 per quarter in 2011.
“This is a huge disappointment to ASI Student Government and the future students of Cal Poly,” said Blake Bolton, ASI president. “Students will not have an opportunity to make an impact like this again in the near future.”
The vote on the proposed ASI student activity fee increase was too close to call after the ballots were counted Thursday night. Ballots were recounted April 22; results showed the measure losing by 75 votes.
