Cal Poly Expects 17,900 Students for Fall Quarter 2004
After Record-Breaking Spring Applications

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly expects to begin its fall quarter Monday with
some 17,000 full-time equivalent students, a number that may grow slightly over the
next few weeks as students add courses.

The university expects to enroll 17,981 students – its target enrollment
total – by the time the add/drop period ends and the official student
census takes place Oct. 28.

As of Sept. 17, some 17,312 students were signed up for fall quarter classes at Cal Poly.

The fall 2004 student enrollment target is lower than targets and actual enrollment for both
2003 and 2002 in light of state budget cutbacks. However, with the
passage of the final state budget, which included additional funding for
enrollment in the California State University system, the CSU increased
all campus enrollment targets. Cal Poly will be increasing winter
quarter admissions to accommodate the additional enrollment called for
by the CSU.

Among the students already expected for the 2004-05 academic year are
2,928 freshmen and 756 transfer students, selected from a pool of 27,042
applicants. The record-setting applications pool marks the 20th year Cal
Poly has received more applications than it can accommodate.

This year’s freshman class has an average high school GPA of 3.77 and an
average SAT score of 1213; transfer students have an average college GPA
of 3.28.

All statistics above are preliminary numbers. Final official data on
enrollment, GPA and other student demographic information will not be
available until after the university’s official student census Oct. 28.
