Cal Poly’s Annual Beef Field Day and Bull Test Sale Set for This Weekend
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cattlemen and women from across the state will
converge at Cal Poly this weekend for the annual Cal Poly Beef Field Day
and 48th Annual Bull Test Sale Oct. 2 and 3 at the Livestock Judging
Pavilion on campus.
The
annual Beef Field Day and Trade Show is co-sponsored by Cal Poly, the
California Beef Cattle Improvement Association, and the California Cattlemen’s
Association. The event features presentations and workshops on the latest
advances in animal science relating to the cattle industry. Field Day
registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Oct. 2 and the program starts at 8:30
a.m. The theme of this year’s program will be “Applying Technology.”
Field Day morning presentations outline technology that will benefit
cattle producers. Presenters include veterinarian Ed Henry, CDFA Animal
Health; Dennis Edlund, American Holstein Association; Theresa Polich and
Gary Veserat, Igenity; veterinarian Nancy Martin, Berryessa Veterinary
Services; and Lex Gamblin, Mineral Specialist, Cargill Animal Nutrition.
Afternoon workshop topics include: marker-assisted selection, use of
electronic identification and tracking systems, farm animal
identification records and breeding season management.
The Field Day also includes a commercial trade show, refreshments, lunch
and a “bull session,” which gives buyers and consignors time
to preview
bulls up for auction at the Tested Bull Sale Oct. 3.
Saturday night, the annual Field Day Barbecue at Madonna’s Alberti
Ranch
will kick off at 7 p.m., with dinner and an auction benefiting the
Collegiate Cattlemen’s Club and the Cal Poly Livestock Judging Team.
The 48th Annual Cal Poly All-Breed Performance Tested Bull Sale is
scheduled for 1 p.m., Oct. 3, in the University’s Livestock Judging
Pavilion.
