Cal Poly Wind Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Mustang Band To Perform ‘Star Spangled Spectacular’ Nov. 6

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly Wind Orchestra, the Wind Ensemble and the 100-member Mustang Band will present “A Star Spangled Spectacular” at Bandfest 2004, set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, in Harman Hall in the Christopher Cohan Center.

“Nobody celebrates Veterans’ Day quite like a band – except maybe three bands,” said William Johnson, conductor of the Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. “The driving energy and sheer exuberance of Cal Poly’s Wind Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Mustang Band will produce a sense of pride and patriotism in honor of American’s men and women who keep freedom
alive.”

“American the Beautiful” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever” are two of the songs of America that will dominate this year’s Bandfest. “Concert-goers and local veterans will experience dramatic musical descriptions of both the Normandy invasion and the Korean battle of
Inchon, according to Johnson.

Other selections will include “Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland, “American Salute” by Morton Gould, “National Emblem” by E.E. Bagley, “Eternal Father Strong to Save” by Claude Smith, “In Service Beyond Self” by Stephen Melillo, “Inchon” by Robert W. Smith, “Lonely Beach” by James Barnes and “Armed Forces Salute,” arranged by Bob Lowden.

“The Cal Poly Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble are wonderful combinations of stunning virtuosity, masterful programming and lighthearted fun,” Johnson said. “These 100 musicians produce the full richness of a symphony orchestra, the intimacy of a chamber ensemble and
the toe-tapping brilliance of a military band. Each concert blends informative commentary, outstanding musicianship and humor.”

David Rackley of the Cal Poly Music Department faculty conducts the Mustang Band.
Chungsam Doh, former conductor of the Republic of Korea Navy Symphonic Band will serve as guest conductor for the Wind Ensemble’s performance of “Inchon.”

During Doh’s for 14 years of service in the Korean Navy, he conducted numerous concerts, including joint concerts with the 8th U.S. Army Band and the U.S. Navy 7th Fleet Band. He led Korean Navy concert tours in Okinawa, Japan; Subic Bay-Manila, Philippines; Bangkok, Thailand, Kuala Lumpar, Maylasia; Kaoshiung, Taiwan; and Djakarta, Indonesia.

In 1974 Doh and his family immigrated to the United States. He directed the first Congregational Church of Bakersfield Choir for 24 years before he and his wife moved to Morro Bay. He directs the San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church Choir and serves on the board of directors for the San Luis Obispo Symphony and on the board of trustees of the Berkshire Choral Festival.
