Cal Poly Arts Brings 'Velveteen Rabbit' to Spanos Theatre Oct. 22 for Family Fun

SAN LUIS OBISPO-- Margery Williams’ book, “The Velveteen
Rabbit,” has engaged the imaginations and hearts of children and their
parents for years. On Friday, October 22 at 7 p.m., Philadelphia’s Mum
Puppettheatre brings the classic tale to life on stage at the Spanos
Theatre.

Mum Puppettheatre’s unique style of wordless narrative combines masks,
shadows, rod and hand puppets, mime, and music to capture the magic of
the “The Velveteen Rabbit” in a production written by Robert Smythe,
with music by Adam Wernick.

Cal Poly Arts presents the critically-acclaimed stage adaptation as part
of their low-cost Family Event series.

Following the performance, the audience is given a look “behind the
scenes” and the opportunity to ask questions about the performance, the
puppets, and the performers.

A show full of wonder and discovery, Cal Poly Arts recommends the
performance for grades Pre-K through 3rd.

In the story, a brand-new plush rabbit finds there is more to life than
the four walls of the nursery. Over time, the rabbit learns that there
is a difference between being a toy and being “real.” Through the love
of his owner, the well-loved and well-worn rabbit understands what it
means to be truly alive.

Since 1985, Mum Puppettheatre has been dedicated to presenting original
productions with original music, focusing on movement and visual imagery
using puppets and masks without dialogue in order to engage the
imaginations of its audiences.

Mum Puppettheatre's unique performances without words have toured three
continents and have been awarded the highest honor: the Citation of
Excellence in the Art of Puppetry. Mum Puppettheatre’s approach to
theatre has also been supported by the Jim Henson Foundation and the
Puppeteers of America.

Tickets for the performance are $15 general public, $12 students/
children, and may be purchased at the Performing Arts Ticket Office, 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by
