Come See “Granny D” Oct. 15 at Cal Poly's Performing Arts Center
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Author and political candidate Doris Haddock,
also
known as “Granny D,” will speak at Cal Poly Friday, October
15, at 7
p.m., in the Christopher Cohan Center.
Haddock and co-author Dennis Burke will talk about the book “Granny
D:
You're Never Too Old to Raise a Little Hell.” The book describes
Haddock’s walk across the United States at the age of 89 to draw
attention to campaign reform, a trek that lasted 18 months and received
national press. Her purpose was to encourage individuals to practice
democracy by illustrating that a single person can make a difference and
have an effect on the political process. The two will also discuss their
experience "practicing democracy."
Haddock will be available for book signing before and after the free
public talk. For more information call (805) 756-1380.
The event is being presented by PREFACE, the Cal Poly Shared Reading
Program. Incoming Cal Poly freshmen and volunteer book discussion group
readers read "Granny D" this summer and discussed it during
WOW, Cal Poly's freshman orientation program.
Haddock is also the first in the 2004-05 Provocative Perspectives
speaker series at Cal Poly. The series began last year as an effort to
create more conversations on campus related to issues of diversity and
free expression.
Cal Poly Vice President for Student Affairs Cornel Morton said that
Haddock was an excellent addition to the series.
“Ms. Haddock is an outstanding example of someone who not only
talks the
talk, but literally walks the walk,” Morton said. “In this
election
year, the participation of all community members in the political
process is vital, and Haddock will help show us how important each
person is in that process.”
Additional speakers throughout the year will include Don Beck, a leading
global authority on value systems, societal change and stratified
democracy; Lloyd Elm, a Native American educator and National Education
Association (NEA) Human and Civil Rights award winner; and Kate
Bornstein, an author and performance artist whose published works
include the books “Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women and the Rest of
Us” and
“My Gender Workbook.”
