Cal Poly Dairy Cattle Judging Team Takes National Title
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s Dairy Cattle Judging Team placed first out of 25 teams competing in the National Intercollegiate Judging Contest held Sept. 27 at the World Dairy Exposition in Madison, Wis.

The Cal Poly team took first place overall, winning by 19 points over the University of Minnesota, which was second. The University of Wisconsin took third place.
The Cal Poly team also took first place in Jerseys and Milking Shorthorns; second place in Brown Swiss, third place in Oral Reasons and Ayrshires; and fifth in Guernseys and Red and White Holsteins.
Cal Poly Dairy Judging Team members included Rebekah Mast, Denair; Michelle
Nelson, Ceres; Matthew Evangelo, Hanford; and Jenna Dibble,
Petaluma.
Mast took second place overall, third in reasons, first in Jerseys, second in Milking Shorthorns, sixth in Brown Swiss, and ninth in Guernseys. Nelson took seventh place overall, ninth in Holsteins and 10th in reasons. Evangelo took 11th overall, seventh in Jerseys and Ayrshires. Dibble took 15th overall.
Cal Poly's Dairy Cattle Judging Team is coached by Dairy Science Professor Stan Henderson. The team is a frequent winner of national collegiate competitions.
“This was a really big win for us,” Henderson said. “This is one of the biggest national competitions.”
The 25 participating universities included Cornell, Purdue, Iowa State, Ohio State, Kansas State, Illinois and Penn State.
