Cal Poly To Celebrate Community Pride Week May 15-21

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly will host its annual Community Pride Week
May 15-21 in an effort to encourage diversity and promote unity
throughout the San Luis Obispo Community.

The Growing Together Fund of the San Luis Obispo Community Foundation
and the Pride Alliance Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT)
Center sponsor the events to educate the campus and community about
gender identity and sexual orientation. “The week is subtitled ‘Out for
Equality,’ because this is such a pivotal time in history. Everyone
should be aware of the civil rights issues at stake,” said Maya Andlig,
coordinator of gender and sexuality programs at Cal Poly.

Events open to the public during the week include:

Saturday, May 15: Cal Poly Gays, Lesbians and Bisexuals United (GLBU)
club softball game. 2:30-5 p.m., Cuesta Park, San Luis Obispo.

Monday, May 17
· Ally Training: Learn what it takes to be a good ally. 10 a.m.-
noon, University Union, Room 220.
· Keynote Speaker: Steven Seidman. Hear from the author of “Beyond
the Closet: The Transformation of Gays and Lesbians,” 7-9 p.m., Chumash
Auditorium.

Tuesday, May 18
· LGBT Life and the Internet: Hear from Ramon Johnson about his
perspective of the Gay Life Guide, 11 a.m.- noon, UU 220.

· Film showing: “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.” A comedy about a
transsexual and drag queens with their pink bus somewhere in the
Outback, 6-8 p.m., Orfalea College of Business Rotunda (Room 213).

Wednesday, May 19
· Panel discussion: “Being Out in the Workplace.” Members from the
community share their experiences. Sponsored by Cal Poly Career
Services, noon-1 p.m., Chumash Auditorium.

· GLBU club Pride Week Meeting: Social hour for meeting new people.
Open to all; 7:30-9 p.m. – Agricultural Sciences Building Room 104.

· GLBU Dance at Tortilla Flats in downtown San Luis Obispo, 10 p.m.;
admission $5.

Thursday, May 20
· Intersex Foundation speaker: Thea Hillman will speak about and
gender identity violence and personal experience. 11a.m.-noon, UU 220.
