in Philips Hall in the Performing Arts Center on campus.

Vargas is the author of "Proletarians of the North: A History of Mexican
Industrial Workers in Detroit and the Midwest, 1917-1933," considered a
ground-breaking study of the subject. His most recent book, "Labor
Rights Are Civil Rights: Mexican American Workers in Twentieth Century
America," is to be published by Princeton University Press at the end of
this year.

Vargas is considered a leader in examining how ethnicity, race and
gender have shaped the lives of working people and their history.

The free, public presentation is sponsored by Cal Poly's Ethnic Studies
Department in honor of the memory of Cesar Chavez. For more information,
