Cal Poly College of Liberal Arts Recognizes Outstanding Faculty, Staff

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s College of Liberal Arts recognized
outstanding faculty and staff members and several recently retired
faculty members at its recent annual reception.

The College Council, comprising the 17 department chairs in the College
of Liberal Arts, selects the faculty award recipients from nominations
made by the faculty. This year faculty awards were presented to Chuck
Slem and Shawn Burn, both professors in the Psychology and Child
Development Department, and to Linda Bomstad, a professor in the
Philosophy Department.

Slem, of San Luis Obispo, won the Outstanding Teaching Award. The
college recognized him for his clear, concise and memorable lectures. He
is an established expert in recitation and Web-based teaching
techniques. Slem earned a doctorate from Wayne State University in 1975
and joined the Psychology and Child Development Department the same
year.

Burn, also from San Luis Obispo, received the Outstanding Scholarship
Award. Her research activities relate to better understanding and
treatment of women and how individuals can function more cooperatively
in groups. She has written three books, 12 journal articles, 24
conference presentations and four grant proposals, making her one of the
most productive faculty members in the department. She earned a
doctorate from The Claremont Graduate University in 1984.

Bomstad, a Los Osos resident, received the Outstanding Service Award.
She joined the Philosophy Department in 1994 and serves as department
chair. She also serves as a faculty associate for Academic Affairs and
co-chairs the Assessment Resource team. Bomstad has been an advocate for
learning assessment issues since 1998, when she served as Cal Poly’s
representative to the California State University Council on Teaching
and Learning and to the CSU Academic Senate.

The College of Liberal Arts’ Outstanding Staff Awardees are nominated by
faculty and staff members. This year Andrea Nash, administrative support
assistant, won the staff award for Continuing Excellence, and Robert
“Bob” Pinkin, equipment technician, won for Outstanding Achievement.

Nash, a resident of San Luis Obispo, joined the Women’s Studies Program
in 2000. She was recognized for her skills and positive attitude and for
coordinating faculty and courses in nine different departments that make
up the Women’s Studies Program.

Pinkin, from Atascadero, was cited for his exceptional level of
achievement in the Graphic Communication Department. He is responsible
for 33,000 square feet of modern laboratories housing millions of
dollars worth of sophisticated technology. Pinkin joined the department
in 1987.
