Cal Poly Names New Dean for Orfalea College of Business

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly has named David P. Christy of Penn State
University as the new dean of the Orfalea College of Business.

Christy is currently the associate dean for undergraduate programs at
Smeal College of Business at Pennsylvania State University. One of four
finalists selected by Cal Poly after a national recruitment effort, he
met with OCOB students, faculty, staff and university administrators at
Cal Poly in late May. Christy’s appointment becomes effective September 1.

“I am very encouraged by Dean Christy's experience, ability to work with
diverse constituents, and professional exuberance,” said Cal Poly
President Warren J. Baker in making the announcement. “He will be a
great asset to the Orfalea College of Business and to Cal Poly."

“We were fortunate to have an extremely strong field of candidates
seeking to become the dean of the Orfalea College of Business, and we’re
very pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Christy,” said Robert
Detweiler, Cal Poly’s Interim Provost. “He has extensive experience
working collaboratively with the College of Engineering at Penn State in
creating programs benefiting students of both disciplines, and he has a
strong background in operations and information systems, making him a
valuable addition to our polytechnic university.”

Christy said he is eager to start his tenure at the university. “I am
really compelled by the Cal Poly philosophy of ‘learn by doing.’ It’s
consistent with everything we know about how the brain works, and how
individuals become engaged with the world,” he said.

Christy holds a doctorate in business administration and a master of
education in curriculum and instruction from the University of Georgia,
as well as a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Dayton.
His areas of expertise include project manufacturability, technology
commercialization, and simulation modeling for production planning.

He joined the Penn State faculty in 1983, serving as an associate
professor of management science. He was active in research in strategic
decisions, as well as production planning and control in manufacturing
organizations. Christy was Chairman of the Management Science &
Information Systems Department from July 1999 until October 2000 when he
became associate dean for undergraduate programs.

Christy chaired the group that developed guidelines for the Penn State
MBA core curriculum during the 1990s. He is a member of Penn State’s
joint business and engineering faculty task force.

He has conducted seminars for executives in Australia, Indonesia,
Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Jamaica and Finland in the
area of manufacturing strategy. A frequent reviewer of journal
manuscripts, he also served as 'at-large' associate editor of the
INFORMS Journal Interfaces, and member of the editorial board of
Production and Operations Management Journal.
