Sustainability in Design, Engineering to be Topic of Cal Poly Structural Forum Feb. 7

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Three noted speakers will share their experiences and insights into sustainability and how it relates to engineering and design at Cal Poly's 14th Annual Structural Forum, to be held on campus Feb. 7.

The free, public lectures are part of a daylong program on “Sustainability in Design” beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Rotunda (Room 213) of Cal Poly's Business Building.

Presentations will begin at 9:15 a.m. with guest lecturer David Mar. He will speak on “Sustainability Issues in Structural Engineering,” covering material and system selection, seismicity, and straw-bale design and research. Mar is a structural engineer and principal of Tipping Mar and Associates, a Berkeley structural engineering firm involved in sustainable engineering.

At 10:45 a.m. Dushyant Manmohan, founder and principal of Applied Materials & Engineering Inc., will speak on “Sustainable High Volume Fly Ash (HVFA) Concrete.” Manmohan, an expert in construction materials engineering, has provided consulting and testing services to the construction industry for 25 years. Since 2001 he has been involved with research, development and testing of HVFA concrete for projects in the San Francisco Bay Area.

At 2 p.m. Charles Kibert, a professor in the Rinker School of Building Construction at the University of Florida and the director and founder of the Powell Center for Construction and Environment, will present “The Future Color of Construction is Green.” Kibert has been instrumental in various institutions and conferences for green development, including the first International Conference on Sustainable Construction, held in Tampa, Fla., in 1994, and Green Building Materials, held in Gainesville, Fla., in 1996. Kibert teaches a newly developed graduate program in sustainable construction at the University of Florida as well as continuing education courses to industry on the subject.

The Structural Forum is hosted by the student chapter of the Structural Engineers Association of California, a club of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design's Architectural Engineering Department.

Architectural engineering senior Krista Kelly, heading up the event, invites everyone to “Come learn how the engineering and design professions are playing a part in the environmental and sustainable concerns of today.”
